Elk Grove Community Connection to Host Joint Public Safety Forum

One of the peculiarities of Elk Grove is that the primary public safety agencies, police and fire, are run by two different government entities, in this case the City of Elk Grove and the Cosumnes Community Services District (CCSD) respectively.

In an effort to provide better information to the public and to seek their input, the Elk Grove Community Connection will host a joint public safety forum on Thursday, March 8 at the Elk Grove City Hall. Along with police officers and firefighters, Elk Grove City council members Gary Davis and Steve Detrick and Mayor Jim Cooper and the entire CCSD board will be in attendance. (Elk Grove city council members Pat Hume and Sophia Scherman declined to attend the event.)

In addition to a presentation on prevention techniques, the forum will also seek ideas and listen to concerns. A reception will start at 6:30 and the forum will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Elk Grove's Run 4 Independence Announces Open Registration

The Elk Grove Food Bank services is happy to announce that open registration will be available beginning February 1 for the Ninth Annual Run 4 Independence, which will take place on Saturday, June 30.

The 10KRun and 5K Run/Walk course is a flat, fast course starting and finishing under the majestic old oak trees in beautiful Elk Grove Regional Park, and is suitable for participants of all ages and abilities. The event also includes a quarter-mile and half-mile kids run.

Elk Grove Unveils Proposed Waysigns

In an effort to promote tourism and ease getting around town for visitors, the City of Elk Grove unveiled proposed waysigns at two public workshops yesterday.

The workshops, a joint effort by the city's public information, public works and economic development departments, were conducted to gather public input on a capital improvement project that the city council is considering.

"This is a starting point for discussion," Elk Grove public information officer Christine Brainerd said. "We want to hear from the community of what should be included."

According to information presented at the meeting, each waysign would cost anywhere from $600 to $1,500 and would be approximately six feet high by four feet wide. The city is also considering the placement of overhead electronic reader signs that would cost approximately $10,000 to $20,000 each.

The current proposal calls for about 47 waysigns and five electric reader signs throughout the city. City officials did not have an estimate of how much installation and other associated costs would be.

Some of the destinations proposed for inclusion are the Elk Grove Regional Park, Cosumnes Community Services District (CCSD) offices, city hall, libraries, senior center, post offices, Old Town, teen center and the Elk Grove Automall. The electronic signs would be used to direct traffic to events such as the Strauss Festival and for public safety messages such as Amber alerts.

One person attending the evening session asked if shopping centers would be included in the program. City economic development director Randy Starbuck said that when the Elk Grove Promenade is finished it would be included along with the automall, but not other shopping facilities.

"The automall is the largest single generator of taxes in the city," Starbuck noted.

Aside from seeking public input, Brainerd said city staff would also meet the CCSD, Elk Grove school officials and representatives from the automall. She said that the city council would probably hear the matter this spring.

Elk Grove Food Bank Receives $20,000 Donation

The Elk Grove Food Bank announced that it was the recipient of a $20,000 donation.

The donation was made possible through the efforts of the Wells Fargo Delta Vineyard District. The Delta Vineyard District includes 12 branches with 210 employees who also also donated six bins of food and clothing collected over the holidays.

“The Wells Fargo Foundation is a corporate-wide program which encourages employees to give to a human services organization within their respective communities,” said Matt Kuennen, Vice President Community Banking District Manager. “The Elk Grove Food Bank was an obvious choice for us. Our volunteer efforts and funding of the food bank will help us work toward strengthening the community in which we live and work.”

The funding is earmarked for EGFBS Support Works program, assisting disadvantaged clients to work toward self-reliance through job readiness training, case management, information and referral, education, homeless services and group support. The leading component of the program, Job Readiness Training, assists clients working towards re-entering the job market by helping them reassess their job skills, update their resume, fine-tune their interview skills, and obtain business clothing from EG clothes closet.

“In order to make our program accessible, we begin by addressing the basic needs of clients,” said Support Works Program Manager Mary Ann Chappelle. “Support Works will add Life Skills classes to the Program in addition to the Job Readiness Training. Classes will be designed for individuals who are preparing for independent living."

Bera Beats Lungren in Fundraising

The Bera for Congress campaign released its fundraising totals for the fourth quarter ending in December and again the Democratic challenger to Dan Lungren outperformed his rival.

Last year Bera has raised $1,103,157, with a cash on hand total of $918,873. Bera is running in California’s new 7th Congressional District, setting up a highly anticipated rematch with Republican Dan Lungren.

In the last three months Bera raised $256,326. According to Bera's campaign, the Elk Grove candidate outraised Lungren for nine consecutive fundraising quarters in a row. Bera also received over 2,300 contributions from individuals, of which over 70 percent were under $100.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support for my candidacy," Bera said. "The support we have built these past few months proves the voters want someone with real world experience to face our nation’s challenges.”

In 2010, Lungren edged out Bera with only 50.1 percent of the vote in a district that at the time had a 13,400 Republican registration advantage. The new district lines add over 16,000 new Democratic voters and is a district that both President Obama and Governor Jerry Brown won by 5 percent.

Both the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report list CA-07 as a pure toss up race. Building on the momentum of an extremely close 2010 contest against Rep. Dan Lungren, it’s anticipated that the rematch will be one of the top races in the 2012 cycle.

Elk Grove Planning Commission to Consider Restrictive Pot Growing Regulations

The Elk Grove Planning Commission will consider regulations tonight that will severely restrict how medical marijuana can be grown in city limits.

Although medical marijuana use was approved by California voters in 1996, it hasn't been until recent years that dispensaries and legal growing operations have proliferated in the state. In response, a patchwork of regulations has evolved in California municipalities.

For Elk Grove, the issue was brought to light last summer when several residents on the city's rural east side complained to the city council about a medical marijuana growing operation. In response, the city council instructed city staff to develop a restrictive growing ordinance.

The proposed ordinance that has evolved and to be considered tonight would among other things confine growing to indoor facilities and require the issuance of a permit from the chief of police.

Once the planning commission hears that matter, the ordinance will then be heard by the city council which is expected to approve it. Tonight's meeting will be held at city hall and starts at 6:30 p.m.

In this season of resolutions, one Elk Grove Councilman is urging constituents to engage in community volunteering.

Citing his families involvement in various activities since locating to Elk Grove, Councilman Steve Detrick is encouraging residents to contribute their time to any number of local organizations.

We became involved in many segments of the Elk Grove community including family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and our business," Detrick said. "Our community involvement is integrated into our everyday lives with church, school, sports, civic involvement and more."

Elk Grove Man Tasered After Injurying Officer, Resisting Arrest

Elk Grove Police used a taser on a suspect New Years Eve after officers tried to arrest him for an active felony warrant.

According to Elk Grove Police Department reports, officers attempted to arrest 32-year-old Joe Soto on the 9200 block of Franklin Blvd. Once Soto was contacted inside the residence, he reportedly became belligerent and refused to comply with instructions.

When the officers attempted to utilize a control hold, Soto reportedly physically resisted and fell to the floor along with the officers. During the struggle, Soto was able to get on top of an officer and intentionally jabbed his thumb into the officer’s eye and bit his finger.

Another officer deployed his taser in an effort to subdue Soto. The suspect continued to struggle with officers for several more minutes before being taken into custody.

The officer suffered moderate injuries and was treated at a local area hospital. Soto was medically cleared for incarceration then transported to the main jail.

To frankly portray the very essence of an addict we have to fully be aware what it is in the human spirit that keeps that addiction going. In this sense, this film fully helps the viewer understand the humbling reality of what it is to be a sexual maniac. The one word that fully describes this movie is this... It is truly HONEST. We see a character cocooned in the very secluded world he has arranged for himself. Looking into his life, you only feel pity and sadness for a self psychologically mutilating person that he had let himself become.

A great relationship collaboration between Director Steve McQueen (no... not the famous actor) and Actor Michael Fassbender. The unity of these two great talents could only result in the telling of a great and tragic story. Both men were applauded for their work in "Hunger," they again join forces to shed light on the reality of sexual addiction. Fassbender plays Brandon Sullivan, a young yuppy living in the epicenter of yuppiville in New York City. Financially stable and physically beautiful, he is painted as someone who has his literal "shit" together. The facade is carefully painted, the perfectness of his crystalline life only has one crackle of a flaw, his unquenchable need for sexual gratification. Visiting porn sites and hiring hookers, he lets his inhibitions loose making it a common day habit. Socially detached and living alone, he enables himself to live in equilibrium. In comes his sister, played fantastically by Carey Mulligan, who also has her own demons to work through. Unlike her big brother, Sissy Sullivan is more aware of the problems and the need to fix the break on their familial relationship. Sissy throws Brandon’s life into a loop when she ushers herself into his life. In this turn of the story, she throws his sexcapade schedule off, enough to shake him into realization that his lifestyle is not so healthy after all.

There are a few cringeful scenes relating to sex, we see the main character having many sexual partners. In one unforgettable scene, Brandon is turned away from a club and he is forced to go to a gay bar instead and randomly hook up with a man. A few minutes later, still not satisfied with having oral copulation with a man, he calls up two women to have a three some. The act of sex is a beautiful thing, but watching Brandon do it in Excess is sickening. Much like watching someone gorge themselves with food, no matter how delectable and well prepared the food may be, watching someone fully extend themselves to eat everything is not a pretty sight. Brandon over extends and over compensates to keep his addiction, he gives up being understood by a potential love interest, and he forfeits his relationship with his sister.

I love the in depth look of a life as a sexual addict. In terms of addiction, I like the fact that the story did not end clean and preserved. Although life altering, the story did not plainly solved the problem cleanly cut. Brandon was still addicted to sex, fucked up things happened, but that may not be his rock bottom. The film subtly explains that there is more steps to overcoming sexual addiction, or any addiction for that matter.

I was not an avid fan of Carey Mulligan prior to this movie. I thought that she was rather stiff and often play the same characters in all her movies. This movie just made me realize she can reach deeper depths when she actually tries to act. You can honestly feel that she believed in this film through her deep and subtle performance, feeding off from a good repertoire between her character and Michael Fassbender’s. Although at times, the two characters cross somewhat of an awkward line. There are times in which their sibling relationship is questioned when they are openly laxed about their bodies to one another… you’ll know when you see it.

In the same token, Michael Fassbender had turned another color in his chameleon like performance of an internally chaotic person. Not alot of actors can pull of a scene, conveying only a message brought out by his facial expression. It is a lost art for actor nowadays to also rely on their bodily movements and facial expressions to also add to their performance. Fassbender’s performance reminds me of the many actors before him who had followed the Strasberg method of acting. The dedication of his performance is commendable, it may be early for me to say, but he truly deserves an Oscar.

I give this film a 4 out of 5 hearts. I also believe it to be a good Oscar contender for this year. May it be best Actor, Best film, or Best Director. I am strongly crossing my fingers for all categories for this film.

Belated Gift May Spell Trouble For California Cities Like Elk Grove

A weekly inspection of my email spam folder revealed a most welcome belated Christmas gift for my pocketbook. This same gift has to be paid by someone and that is something that will not be so pleasing for California cities like Elk Grove.

The email was from the Sacramento County Tax Assessor’s office informing me that yes, the property tax assessment appeal I filed earlier this month was granted. Specifically, the assessed value of my house would be lowered by slightly more that 11 percent.

For me it means a savings of a few hundred dollars this year and for many years to come given the anemic state of California's real estate market and the annual limits on increases compliments of Prop. 13. In fact if property values stagnate, much less continue their free fall, it would take a minimum of five years before the assessments to be back to this year's levels.

The implications for municipalities are pretty clear. It is not known how many people have exercised this right to have their assessment lowered, not to mention properties that have be sold at amounts lower than their previous assessments. One must suspect that it is a significant number.

So while the national economy is showing minor signs of recovery, the real estate collapse will continue to linger particularly when it comes to government receipts from property taxes. Cities like Elk Grove ought to brace for several more years of tightening budgets.

The American Spirit - Artist Help Revitalize Their City

(NAPSI)-When thinking of Detroit today, images of abandoned buildings and urban decay may come to mind. That's what many folks think Detroit has become in the face of escalating unemployment, rising poverty and increasing crime. But there is a growing community of creative individuals who are undaunted by the stereotypes and are banding together to revitalize this once-great city.

By moving back into the city and taking advantage of inexpensive living spaces, they support restaurants and retailers while creating an inviting vibe in what was once a nearly abandoned urban center.

Just look at 22-year-old Veronika Scott, a graduate of the design program at Detroit's College for Creative Studies. Today, she's running a nonprofit company based in Detroit that produces innovative, self-heating coats that transform into waterproof sleeping bags. She calls it "The Empowerment Plan" and hopes to produce 1,000 coats in 2012. The Empowerment Plan provides homeless with skills they need to earn a living, creating the coats needed to survive the winter.

Another CCS graduate, Kobie Solomon, 33, is also doing his part to bring vibrancy back to downtown Detroit. Kobie is a celebrated graffiti artist who combines his formal training as a fine artist with his passion for "aerosol art" with stunning results that have earned him commissions from a variety of clients, including Reebok, T-Mobile and General Motors. He recently completed the largest single graffiti mural in Detroit's history at the Russell Industrial Center, a former auto factory turned into a professional center for commercial and creative arts.

And then there's the young, talented musician Sean Forbes, who is deaf. His mission is to build a bridge between the music industry and deaf people. He grew up in Detroit, experiencing great music in his own way. Now, he is the co-founder of D-PAN, the Deaf Professional Arts

Network, a non-profit organization that focuses on translating popular artists' songs into American Sign Language music videos. His enthusiasm has captured the attention of actress Marlee Matlin, who appeared in a music video with him, and Jack White and Bob Dylan, who have both donated songs for D-PAN's use.

These three entrepreneurial artists are being featured in a new three-part television series airing on Ovation in April called "Motor City Rising."ÊThe series features many others who are using art and creativity to make a difference.

Elk Grove Cops Catch Copper Crooks

With strong prices, copper thefts are increasing nationwide.

Elk Grove Police arrested two Sacramento men yesterday morning after they were suspected of stealing copper piping from an empty Elk Grove house.

According to police reports, a witness reported seeing two men removing copper piping from an empty house on the 9200 block of Bromfield Court yesterday morning. Before the officers arrived at the scene, the two suspects reportedly drove away in a white Chevy Astro van.

An officer who was responding located the vehicle in the vicinity and initiated an enforcement stop. After detaining the two suspects, officers searched the vehicle and discovered copper piping along with air conditioner parts, pipe cutters and other burglary tools.

After being positively identified by the witness, police arrested 28-year-old Nicolai Tcacisin and 33-year-old Aleksandr Tikhomirov. Police later discovered the duo were also suspects in three other copper heists.

Hobbs Hired Away From Elk Grove

The City of Lincoln hires Jonathon Hobbs as their next city attorney.

According to a story posted on the Sacramento Business Journal, Hobbs has been hired by the Placer County city as their next city attorney. He will replace Tim Hayes, who retired this month.

Hobbs was appointed Elk Grove's interim city attorney last summer after the sudden departure of Susan Cochran. Hobbs will continue to act as interim city attorney for Elk Grove until a permanent replacement is hired.

Elk Grove Selects New Mayor in Messy Manner

Although the mayoral position in Elk Grove is largely a ceremonial job that in the past has been filled in a relatively orderly manner, tonight’s selection of mayor can be best described as messy.

In what will be Elk Grove’s last mayor selected by the city council, members selected Jim Cooper to be the Mayor for 2012. Before selecting Cooper in a 3-2 vote, the council heard a pitch by Steve Detrick to continue in his position as Mayor for another year.

During a lengthy introduction of the city’s numerous department heads and discussing various successes the city has enjoyed during the last year, Detrick made a pitch for continuity through 2012.

“This is the best year this city has ever had,” Detrick opined. “So my recommendation is to keep the council the way it is. That is the position I take tonight.”

After Detrick’s suggestion Elk Grove resident and former city planning commissioner Paul Lindsay urged the council to select Pat Hume as the mayor because he is the only current council member not running for office next year. Lindsay, who is a member of the community group Elk Grove First, noted that he was speaking on his own behalf.

After Lindsay’s comments Hume acknowledged that he is not running for any office next year. “I would be willing to accept if nominated,” he said.

Detrick quickly noted that the filing deadline for next year’s election is August and that papers could still be filed up to that time. Hume won reelection to his second council term in 2010 and has been rumored to be interested in challenging fellow council member Gary Davis who is running to be Elk Grove’s first popularly elected mayor.

“I told you Steve, I am not running [for mayor],” Hume quickly retorted.

During deliberations council member Sophia Scherman made a motion nominating Hume as mayor but the motion died for a lack of second. Davis then reiterated a motion he made very early in the proceedings nominating Cooper.

Detrick, who was not nominated, seconded the motion. Hume and Scherman voted against Cooper.

Hume was subsequently nominated and elected vice mayor by a 4-1 vote with Cooper voting in opposition. Cooper and Hume assumed their new positions on the council after a brief recess.

Cooper, one of two original members still on the council served as the city's first mayor in 2000 and again in 2007.

‘Banks go bailed out, we got sold out’

As part of a national demonstration organized by MoveOn.org, a spirited group of protesters met in Elk Grove this morning to express their displeasure with large banking organizations.

As an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy Elk Grove movement, today’s “Make Wall Street Pay” protest was specifically targeted with the message to close accounts at the big bank and move it to a credit union. Today’s protest was held near Franklin Blvd. and Laguna Blvd. – the site of three large banks; Bank of America, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo.

The protest started at the Bank of America branch with the two dozen participants marching across the street to the U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo branches. Along the way Occupy Elk Grove organizer Todd Elving led the protesters by shouting “Banks got bailed out” with the rest responding “We got sold out.”

While many have sought to portray the protesters nationally as jobless malcontents, particularly in the recent Oakland demonstrations, several members of the Elk Grove demonstration stressed they were employed and were peacefully demonstrating. When the group approached the Wells Fargo branch with a full-throated chant underway, one of the protesters reminded everyone to stay on the sidewalk because, as she said, they “promised the chief [Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner] we would stay on the sidewalks.”

While the main focus of this protest was directed at large banks which were at the center of the credit crisis which led to the Great Recession, most all of those in attendance had other grievances with the current economy and state of the nation. Typical of those was Elk Grove resident Laurie Comstock.

Self-employed, without current health insurance and a few years to young for Medicare or Social Security, Comstock said she had her house foreclosed by U.S. Bank and is quite upset with politicians.

“I am angry at the politicians, they sold us out,” Comstock said. “Lungren especially, he is for big business, not us.”

Comstock said she has always worked and paid her fair share of taxes. “I’d like the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes,” she added.

While the message was serious, the protesters nonetheless also found levity in their actions. Organizer Elving joked that perhaps the a new political party called the “99’ers” could be formed to recognize the 99 percent mantle which has been at the center of the protest movement as well as Highway 99 which has been part of the Occupy Elk Grove’s movement.

One protester who also attended the mass Oakland demonstrations earlier this week was Elk Grove resident Malik Abdul-Khaliq who said he was encouraged by not only the national movement, but the support protesters heard from car honks at the busy intersection.

Abdul-Khaliq, an adjunct professor of Ethnic Studies at Sacramento State said that people are being pinched and that the movement represents a watershed moment. “We are witnessing people power,” he noted.

Although it is unclear how many people will close their bank accounts and go to credit unions, the middle-aged commercial sign-waving man the protesters march passed at the corner Laguna and Franklin shouted words of encouragement. “I switched to a credit union,” he said while waving a “We buy gold” sign.

1 pound lean ground beef
1/3 cup Kalamata olives, chopped
3 tablespoons crumbled feta
1 teaspoon dried dill
3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons finely chopped yellow onion
1 tablespoon chopped scallions
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon fresh oregano, chopped
(or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano)
4 brioche rolls, split and toasted
4 lettuce leaves, washed and dried
4 tomato slices
4 cucumber slices (optional)
4 thin slices red onion (optional)

Preparation

Stir together all avocado tzatziki ingredients (see recipe) and chill in fridge at least one hour or longer.
With your hands or a wooden spoon, mix ground beef, olives, feta, dill, breadcrumbs, onion, scallions, salt, pepper, garlic and oregano until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Shape the meat mixture into four 1/2-inch-thick patties.
Grill over medium-hot coals or pan grill over medium heat for 5 minutes per side. The burgers should no longer be pink in the center.
To serve, place each burger on a roll, spoon on a little tzatziki, and top with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and onion slices to your taste.

Avocado Tzatziki

Ingredients

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon minced garlic (about 1 large clove)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 cups plain nonfat Greek yogurt
1 cup peeled, seeded and grated cucumber (about 1 medium cucumber)
1 whole peeled avocado, diced small

Preparation

Add lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and salt to the yogurt. Add grated cucumber, diced avocado and mix well. Chill for at least one hour.

Grilled Vegetables and Ginger Citrus Mayonnaise

Ingredients

2 each crookneck or summer squash, baby zucchini, large whole carrots, large fennel or 3 medium fennel bulbs
5 to 6 shallots
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
Extra virgin olive oil
Ginger Citrus Mayonnaise
3 juicy oranges, grapefruits, Meyer lemons, mineolas, tangerines, Mandarins, blood oranges, etc., cut in half (6 halves total)
3 tablespoons (or more for desired consistency) store bought preferred mayonnaise
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Preparation

Preheat grill for vegetables.
To make the mayonnaise, squeeze all the juice out from 5 of the 6 citrus halves into a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. When juice begins to boil, lower heat to medium-high and reduce juice until thick and syrupy, being careful not to let it burn.
Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and allow to cool slightly. (At this point you can grill the vegetables). Whisk in mayonnaise, ginger, and cayenne pepper until smooth. Squeeze in juice from last remaining citrus half, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Cut all veggies in half lengthwise, rub all sides sparingly with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Grill, cut side down first, for 4 to 6 minutes if small, 5 to 8 minutes if large pieces. Flip so skin side is down, and grill all an additional 1 to 2 minutes, until all veggies are firm but easily sliced with a knife. Serve on platter alongside bowl of ginger citrus mayonnaise or drizzled on top of vegetables.

Elk Grove Police, Fire Officals Urge Pool Safety

In Sacramento County, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages one through five. According to the Sacramento County Child Death review team, 57 children under the age of 18 died due to drowning between 2000 and 2008. Of the 57 deaths, 38 (67%) were children under six years of age.

Of the 38 children less than six years of age who died due to drowning, 69% died in a pool, hot tub or spa. Since April, the Elk Grove Police Department and the Cosumnes Fire Department have responded to two fatal drowning calls where the children were under the age of six.

Many people assume that, at a residence with a pool, spa or hot tub, the danger of drowning occurs only when the family is outside. But, a common scenario takes place when young children leave the house without a parent or caregiver realizing it. Children are drawn to water, not knowing the terrible danger pools, spas or hot tubs can pose.

"A drowning can occur in a matter of minutes,” Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner said. “Children drown without a sound. They often do not have an opportunity to yell for help and are quickly overwhelmed.”

The key to preventing these tragedies is to know the ABC’s of Drowning Prevention.

A for Adult Supervision

• Adult supervision is the key to drowning prevention. Always assign a “water watcher” who knows how to swim.

B for Barriers

• Put in, check and always use a child-proof barrier (5 feet tall, non-climbable and self-latching) around your pool/spa area.

C for CPR & Classes

• Learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and rescue breathing.

“Having responded to drowning emergencies personally, I can tell you firsthand the incredible emotional toll these tragic deaths have on not only the family and friends of the victim, but the first responders and the community as a whole,” Cosumnes Fire Department Fire Chief Tracey Hansen said. “These deaths are preventable if these steps are followed closely.”

Quick, Tasty Meals at Noodles

The American classic Mac and Cheese with white truffle oil

Recently we found ourselves in Roseville taking care of business and as luck would have it, we decided to visit the Noodles restaurant located in The Fountains shopping center.

A Boulder, Colorado-based chain, at its name implies this establishment specializes in noodle-based meals along with an assortment of soups, salads and sandwiches. Using the logic that one rarely goes to Chinese restaurant for a hamburger, we decided to go with their mainstays.

The noodle dishes come in regular and small sizes and span the globe as they are in three classifications - Asian, Mediterranean and American. To get a good sampling we decided to share one small dishes from each classification.

We selected the Japanese caramilized nudon noodles, pesto cavatappi with a parmesan-crusted chicken breast and one of the limited time specials, a mac and cheese laced with white truffle oil and baby portabello mushrooms.

Caramelized Japanese nudon noodles - spicy and sweet

First things first, each of the dishes was prepared to order and arrived hot at the same time. If there there is one bothersome practice is being served communal dishes in stages - I want them all presented at the same time - just my little quirk.

Once served, we dug in and found each to be fresh, hot and flavorful.

The nudon noodles had the right amount of spicy heat and the vegetables were not over cooked. Likewise, the dish could have used a little less sugar as the noodles tended to be a bit sweet for our tastes.

The pesto cavatappi, which was served with a tasty lightly parmesan crusted chicken breast was satisfying. The pesto sauce was tasty but could have used a bit more garlic and fresh basil.

The hit of the meal was the limited time special mac and cheese. Once a dish relegated as a waiting-to-get-paid family budget stretcher, mac and cheese in recent years has been promoted first to

a classic comfort food and now to a sort of American haute cuisine.

Noodles version was the hit of the meal.

First they start with your standard cheddar sauce, add a variety of shredded jack cheeses and for good measure add fresh parsley, portabella mushrooms and top it off with fresh made-in-the-store bread crumbs. This was not your regular mac and cheese - the extra zing and flavor in this American classic must be attributed to the white truffle oil.

Whatever the reason, the special mac and cheese was an a unqualified hit. And the three small portions were more than enough for two with plenty left over to take home.

Dulac Dirty Rice Mini Frittatas

Ingredients

1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 package Zatarain's Dirty Rice Mix, Original
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup toasted chopped pecans
14 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions
1/4 cup each chopped red and yellow bell pepper

Preparation

Cook and stir sausage in large skillet on medium-high heat 5 minutes or until no longer pink. Drain fat. Prepare rice mix as directed on package with sausage. Stir in raisins and pecans. Set aside.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 2 (12-cup) muffin tins generously with no stick cooking spray. Set aside. Mix eggs and milk in large bowl until well blended. Add onions and bell peppers; mix well. Place 1/4 cup of the rice mixture into each muffin cup. Pour egg mixture evenly into each cup.
Bake 20 minutes or until eggs are set. Run small knife or spatula around each cup to loosen frittatas. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Ingredients

5 cups water
1/4 cup oil (optional)
2 packages Zatarain's Jambalaya Mix, Original
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed
1 pound smoked sausage, 1/4 inch thick
1/2 cup sliced green onions (optional)

Preparation

Bring water and oil to boil in large saucepan. Stir in Rice Mixes, chicken and sausage; return to boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 25 minutes or until rice is tender.
Remove from heat. Let stand 5 minutes. Sprinkle with green onions before serving.

Red Bean and Rice Party Dip

Ingredients

3 cups water
1 package Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice
1 cup salsa
2 tablespoons chopped jalapeño peppers
2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese

Preparation

Prepare rice mix as directed on package, using 3 cups water instead of 3 1/4 cups.
Reserve 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the shredded cheese to garnish dip, if desired. Stir remaining ingredients into rice mixture. Place mixture into food processor or blender; cover. Process or blend until smooth.
Keep dip warm in a chafing dish or slow cooker, if desired.

King Cake Cupcakes

Ingredients

Yellow Butter Cake
1/4 pound butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 1/4 cup cake flour
1/2 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Creole Cream Cheese Filling with Root Beer

1 pound softened Creole or regular cream cheese
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 pound powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon Zatarain's Root Beer Extract
Dried fava beans (set aside)

Root Beer Frosting

1 pound powdered sugar
1/4 pound butter
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup water
Pinch of salt
1 teaspoon Zatarain's Root Beer Extract

Preparation

In a mixer at medium speed, cream butter, sugar, and salt together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time while the mixer is running, making sure each egg is totally mixed in before adding another. Beat mixture until light and fluffy, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl carefully.
In a separate mixing bowl, combine flour and baking powder using a wire whisk to sift and combine them. In another separate bowl, mix the milk and vanilla.
Alternate adding wet and dry ingredients to butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Do not over mix, as batter should be thick and fluffy. Spoon into lined cupcake pans, filling each cup about 2/3 full. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 14 minutes or until done.
Creole Cream Cheese Filling with Root Beer -Combine shortening and cream cheese in mixer at medium speed and whip with paddle until smooth.
Add powdered sugar and whip until fluffy; mix in root beer extract until well combined.
Root Beer Frosting - Combine all ingredients in bowl of mixer. Beat together at medium speed until light and fluffy.
To assemble cupcakes: Use a 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon to scoop out the center of completely cooled cupcakes from the top to about halfway down.
With a piping bag, or plastic bag with the corner snipped off, fill the hole with filling.
Insert a dried fava bean into filling of each cupcake. Note: fava bean is for decoration only and should not be eaten.
Using a star tip and separate piping bag, pipe frosting starting on the outside, working your way to the center in one continuous motion. Top with green, purple and yellow or gold sprinkles or decorative sugar like on a traditional King Cake.

Sacramento Philharmonic presents: A Return to Beethoven

The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra announces their annual tribute to Beethoven. The repertoire also includes Milhaud’s The Creation of the World and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24.

Pianist Sara Davis Buechner will be featured as the concert’s guest artist, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Known for her multifaceted playing power and artistic dexterity, Ms. Buechner is the recipient of numerous international piano competitions. Her somewhat controversial personal story, as well as its connection to the classical music community at large, has been featured in publications around the world.

As part of the Beethoven tribute weekend a family-friendly Target Family Concert matinee will be held on Sunday afternoon, featuring musical and themed activities in the lobby. A performance by the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and B Street Theatre will follow shortly thereafter, telling the story of Ludwig van Beethoven and playing his Symphony No. 7, as well as Milhaud’s Creation of the World. Beethoven & Beyond will be free for all children under 12 years old.

Expert Reveals Historic Accuracy of Oscar™ Hopeful’s

Representation of Women in the Old West

Nancy Williams loved the new film adaptation for True Grit, and even though the depiction of its defiantly strong teenage girl Mattie Ross wasn’t completely true to history, she felt it was true enough.

Williams, an expert on women’s issues in the Old West, said her only problem with the character of 14-year-old Ross, as played by Oscar hopeful Hailee Steinfeld, was that she did not represent the typical young woman of the Old West.

“At first glance I would say True Grit was not very true to history,” said Williams, also a veteran staffer of women’s crisis centers and author of Hawkmoon (www.nlwbooks.com). “Frontier women typically didn’t carry a gun, straddle a horse, or talk back with such brazenness. They either kept the house, cooked and tended the children, or they were school teachers or prostitutes. The stereotypes we see in the typical western novel or movie are not without basis in reality.”

The character of Mattie Ross did, however, match up with legends of some of the few women who stood out from the crowd as strong women who straddled their horses as they rode them against the grain.

“Despite the fact Mattie was not typical of the young girl of that era, there are enough women in the history of the Old West that broke the mold to make the story of True Grit believable,” Williams added. “Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley and a particularly feisty woman by the name of Sally Skull are a few that come to mind. These women, like Mattie Ross, were tough, capable, and sometimes deadly, rivaling any man in the ability to shoot, ride, play cards and talk trash.”

While not completely true to history, the character resonates with modern audiences because of the changing role of women in America, according to Williams.

“I think the modern woman is more able to identify with strong female characters like Mattie Ross,” she added. “No longer can we relate to the frontier wife who works at home and cooks, cleans and feeds the chickens. Showcasing women who can ride with the boys is another way that will keep westerns contemporary. Officers from the Elk Grove Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Unit will be available to answer questions from members of the community on January 21, 2011 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at La Bou (8694 Elk Grove Blvd.) and Peet’s Coffee (8234 Laguna Blvd.) as part of the “Coffee with a Cop” program.

“It’s very important that our police officers develop strong relationships within the community,” Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner said. “We believe that this type of open dialogue plays a critical role in establishing a true partnership between the community and the police department.”

Members of the community will be able to ask specific or general questions related to the neighborhoods they live in.

Is Elk Grove First Alive?

With much bluster, the community group Elk Grove First (EGF) burst on the scene last year. the group, whose stated mission is to:

To strengthen the Elk Grove community through positive and constructive interaction.

The group, which lists it founders as the two Jakes, former Elk Grove City Charter Commission, Jake Allen and Jake Rambo has had little public visibility since their founding. At last months Elk Grove City Council meeting EGF President generously offered to provide their services as the city grapples with reapportionment for 2012.

Hopefully the city council will see this for what it is: an attempt to place another Pat Hume or Sophia Scherman clone, read some "un-named" pro-developer slacky, on the dais.

We will be keeping an eye on this group.

The story captures the dynamic relationship between the oldest sibling Dicky Ecklund who is the black sheep of the family (Christian Bale,) and the youngest brother Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) the redeemer. It questions the posibilities of dreams coming true, if only we push aside the things that hold as back, even if the main hinderance is family.

Dicky had his moment of glory back when he was in a straight and narrow path towards greatness, having been able to knock out Sugar Ray Leonard. He failed to follow through since he had succumbed to smoking crack in his spare time.

In due time, Dicky lost his opportunities and is now living through his younger brother's abilities in the ring.

A contrast to Dicky is his little brother Mickey, ever faithful and ever loyal, he takes up boxing as the main bread winner of the clan. To take care of his mother and his full litter of sisters, he has to box, even if it means boxing agains a boxer twice his size. Mickey's loyalty is put to the test when he is offered better training contracts from a different management. Everything also gets complicated when he meets Charlene, played amazingly by Amy Adams, tough as nails bar tender chick who even stands up to a flock of angry women in one scene. Infuriated at his brothers lack of regard to their family, Mickey sets his priorities straight by excluding his family in his career. A full support from Charlene, he sets out to achieve glory without being held back by his stifling family.

As always, Christian Bale plays his character perfectly, pathetic and arrogant. A perfect picture of a once flourishing athlete, now in the pitfalls of regret and addiction. True to his performance is the physical change that Christian had to go through to play a drug addicted ex-boxer. Fit enough to handle real punches and blows, but skeletally thin as a drug addict. Also a scene stealer was the matriarch of the family Alice Ward, played by Melissa Leo, a street wise lady and tough as nails when it comes to managing her family. Melissa Leo captured a mother in denial about her drug addicted son, and her absent minded support for the other perfectly. Like many mothers in the world, she lays the guilt trip thick, forgoing Mickey's chance to shine just to keep the boxing business within the family. A mother needing to be needed, Melissa Leo captures the heart of a woman in the brink of a meltdown in the process of letting her two boys mature, no matter how late that maturation would be for Dicky.

The boxing sequnces were also delivered very well, it was said that Mark Wahlberg was actually taking real punches during the fight scenes in the ring. It was also said that Manny Pacquiao trained Wahlberg for the fighting sequences.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 hearts. I loved every scene, every character, the star quality deliverance each actor had brought fort from their performances. I would not be suprised if Christian Bale and Melissa Leo gets nominated for Oscars this year. Brilliant movie.

Salvation Army introducing text to give during Dec. 3 bell ringing event

The Salvation Army of Sacramento will officially kickoff its text-to-give campaign at its Celebrity Bell Ringing event on Friday, December 3 at Loehmann’s Plaza (near Fulton Ave and Fair Oaks Blvd in Sacramento). The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The Salvation Army understands that the public is looking for different ways to give back,” said David Bentley, Salvation Army Sacramento County coordinator. “We feel the text-to-give method just makes things quick, easy and efficient for our new and existing donors.”

A $10 donation can be made when someone text “Give2DO” at 85944. The campaign will officially end on December 24.

Besides the Christmas assistance, money collected from the bell ringing efforts will go back to year-round Salvation Army programs. These programs include the B Street Transitional Shelter, assistance for families, youth and senior programs, and summer camp.

Celebrity Bell Ringing is an annual fundraiser in which Sacramento radio/television personalities, local dignitaries, athletes and law enforcement representatives volunteer for a half hour to an hour and stand at one of the popular Salvation Army kettles located throughout the mall. Great Skiing at Tahoe

(NORTH LAKE TAHOE, California/Nevada) – A powerful storm rolled into Lake Tahoe on Friday leaving 6.5 feet of new snow at the ski resorts’ upper elevations by Monday morning. An additional 2 feet of new snow is expected to fall by Tuesday night, with skies clearing Wednesday for a sunny and spectacular holiday weekend.

“This was the perfect storm,” said Tourism Director Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. “It came in fast, dropped a ton of snow, setting us up with superior snow conditions and skiing for the holiday weekend. Skiing and boarding at Thanksgiving is what Lake Tahoe is all about.”

Many North Lake Tahoe ski resorts have opened, including Boreal Mountain Resort, Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe and Squaw Valley USA. Others are opening in time for the holiday weekend: Sugar Bowl Ski Resort on Wednesday, November 24, Soda Springs and Tahoe Donner Cross Country on Thanksgiving, November 25 and Alpine Meadows Ski Resort on Friday, November 26.

Tahoe Cross Country in Tahoe City had one of its earliest openings ever and has 22 out of 65 groomed kilometers available. The U.S.’s largest cross country resort, Royal Gorge, is scheduled to open their doors Friday, November 26 through Sunday, November 28. Non-skiers aren’t left out as Granlibakken Lodge’s famed sledding hill is also now open for business, with the ski hill opening December 17.

Diamond Peak is scheduled to open on December 16, Homewood Mountain Resort on December 17 and Tahoe Donner Downhill on December 10. Spooner Lake Cross Country is to be announced. But not everyone can gracefully schuss down black diamond slopes and North Lake Tahoe ski resorts are giving novice skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to learn at bargain prices. The annual tradition of the construction of the Christmas CanTree will officially take place on Monday, November 22 at the Secret Garden in Elk Grove (8450 West Stockton Blvd.). The creation of the CanTree will occur from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

The Christmas CanTree is an annual fundraising drive sponsored by the Sacramento Association of REALTORS (SAR), which culminates in building giant Christmas trees made entirely of canned foods. The trees are symbolic of SAR’s fundraising efforts year-round. Each tree will be made up of more than 18,000 cans.

Money raised by SAR benefit The Salvation Army’s food pantry in Sacramento. Since its start in 1983, The Christmas CanTree project has evolved into a series of year-round fundraising activities. SAR has collected more than $2 million in the last 27 years.

Along with the Elk Grove location, Christmas CanTrees will also be constructed at Country Club Plaza and Sunrise Mall on November 23.

Special Click It or Ticket Enforcement Mobilization Aimed at Seat Belt Use & Saving Lives

With the holidays upon us and millions of Americans hitting the roads, the Elk Grove Police Department wants everyone to arrive safely at their destinations. Drivers and passengers need to know that officers will be out in force sending the strong message to “Click It or Ticket”.

“No one wants to start the holidays off wrong with a ticket,” Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner said. “Save your money for turkey and buying presents for loved ones – don’t throw it away simply because you failed to buckle up.”

While seat belt use is at a record high of 83 percent nationwide, 45 million Americans still fail to buckle up when they get in a motor vehicle. Even though in California 96.2 percent use their restraints, it still means that over 1.5 million Californians don’t buckle up.

During the holiday period, over 35 vehicle occupants who are not buckled up will be killed in motor vehicle crashes each day nationwide. Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009 due in part to the increased use of seat belts. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades.

“Sadly, the holidays, which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic,” Lehner said.

“Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes,” Christopher J. Murphy Director of the California Office of Traffic safety said. “Law enforcement estimates indicate that over 1300 Californians survived by buckling up last year. Sadly however, about 150 others will not be gathering with families during the holidays because they choose not to use their seat belts.”

National statistics also show that those least likely to buckle up are teens, young adults, males, nighttime riders, motorists traveling on rural roads, and individuals traveling in pickup trucks.

More than 100 local law enforcement agencies statewide and the CHP will be participating in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization. Funding to support California’s Click It or Ticket campaign was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Closures on Bilby Road Ahead

Starting this week, the City of Elk Grove will be closing portions of Bilby Road, west of Willard Parkway, for roadway improvements related to the Taylor Morrison residential development known as “Franklin Crossing.”

When complete, the project will improve traffic flow and safety, add new sidewalks along a portion of Bilby Road and will extend Willard Parkway to the south.

Road and lane closures will take place on the following dates:

Beginning November 12: Full road closure of Bilby Road between Willard Parkway and the railroad tracks from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The road will reopen at 6 a.m. daily for traffic in both directions.
Starting November 20: A full road closure of Bilby Road between Willard Parkway and the railroad tracks. The road will remain closed to through traffic during this period and will reopen on or before 6 a.m. on November 29.

Remaining construction activities may require lane closures as needed throughout December.

Access to residences adjacent to the immediate area of work and through access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Detours will be clearly marked. Message signs will alert motorists in advance of the road and lane closures before construction begins. Residents and businesses in the vicinity will be notified in writing by the contractor.

Nowhere boy emphasizes the life of John Lennon (Aaron Johnson) during his High School, pre-Beatles era, mid-Quarry Men stardom. It give us a closer look at the anguish and turmoil a teenage boy experiences, being pitted in-between two parental juggernauts, one his birth mother Julia (Anne Marie Duff) who had left him at a young age due to marriage discourse with John's father, and his Aunt Mimi (his mother's sister, Kristin Scott Thomas) who had raised him as her own.

The drama unfolds, when John finally meets his mother and get to know her personality during frequent secret trips to her nearby home. Much like any child wanting to know a little about themselves through their birth parents personalities, he progresses to finding his love of music along with his unorthodox rebelliousness through Julia.

The heart wrenching story touches the core of anyone who watches it simple because of the four star performances that all three main actors give. Anne Marie Duff captured perfectly the socially improper mother coming into terms with her mistakes, making late amends to her young son. Only realizing now, that the actions she made rippled stronger onto the future pushing her to a needed personal growth through turmoil.

Although it is well known that Kristen is a guaranteed success in her craft, she still embodies this by keeping consistent with her portrayal of every character she studies. Kristen shows the restrictions of a female trying to be strong for her young in times of hardships and loss. In her facial expressions alone you can read the anger, the frustrations, and the bitterness towards Julia.

I have seen Aaron Johnson in "The Greatest" costarring Susan Sarandon, although he had a small role in the movie, I sensed that he would be one of the next up and coming English actors. By choosing a role as dramatic as this, and executing it perfectly he bypassed the stage of just being a cute face in girl teen flicks.

This role required Aaron to learn guitar, how to perform onstage, to learn John Lennon's mannerism, and also learn the dynamics of a boy from a broken family history. Aaron's charisma transferred into the film, and you can tell he loved the role by the performance. There are many facets to this youg actor, and he convincingly pulls each off. One scene he's funny, dumb and naive, in the next he's bullish, troubled and angry.

Director Sam Taylor Wood did a brilliant job churning out great performances from all the actors. Seeing how Paul, John and George would have been in their younger years, I get goose bumps at knowing full well what they have accomplished in music alone. Although the movie is not about the Beatles, there are scenes that conjure nostalgia like the infamous recording of their first demo song towards the end of the film. This was a tasteful biographical movie that I am sure John would approve of.

Walgreens robbed at gunpoint for 'Hillbilly Heroin'

An armed robber held up the Walgreens on the 7200 bock of Laguna Boulevard just past midnight on Friday morning.

According to Elk Grove Police reports, a Caucasian male adult in his 20's entered the store and handed an employee a note demanding the prescription drug Oxycontin, also know as 'Hillbilly Heroin.' The suspect then displayed a black handgun and demanded two bottles of the drug.

The employee complied with the demands and the suspect then fled on foot. The employee was not injured.

The suspect was described as 5' 9" 170 lbs. wearing a white baseball cap, white Long sleeved button-up dress shirt with thin strips and blues jean.

Scores of people were drawn to the Elk Grove Public Library this afternoon to meet and listen to book readings by two members of the Sacramento Kings.

Providing the readings were forward Carl Landry and guard/forward Francisco Garcia. Along with reading books, Garcia read a Spanish language book, both happily signed autographs for dozens of fans.

While the event was primarily designed for children, 'kids' of all ages turned out. As one young lady said, "It was great to see these guys out here in Elk Grove." She added, "They are really tall!"

Elk Grove City Council Appoints Jason Lindgren as City Clerk

The Elk Grove City Council Wednesday night announced the appointment of Jason Lindgren to the position of City Clerk. Formerly the City of Elk Grove’s Assistant City Clerk, and acting as Interim City Clerk since May 2010, Lindgren has served the City of Elk Grove for five years.

“City Clerks have a tremendous responsibility of ensuring open and public government and retaining the public’s trust,” Mayor Sophia Scherman said. “I have the utmost confidence in Mr. Lindgren, and know his experience, intellect and integrity will fulfill the complex demands of his new position.”

Lindgren is responsible for overseeing all official City records, contracts and agreements, preparing City Council agendas and minutes, serving as the City’s elections official, and managing operations of the department.

Elk Grove Police officers will host the 17th annual Halloween and Safety Fair on Saturday, October 23, 2010. The event will be held at the Marketplace 99 Shoppong Center on Highway 99 and Bond Road.

And, if elected on November 2, 2010, to The People’s Seat, I pledge to work hard for working families and to be a major player in creating jobs and fostering economic stability and dependability in and around our area.

I will fight for every working citizen and those that receive the benefits of their labor. I will fight hard to recover the Elk Grove Economy for the hard-hit business community, as well. I will help to restructure an economy where businesses will gain back their confidence and will once again offer jobs with job security—where workers can count on more than just a salary, but a salary that is stable and sustainable with fair wages, wage protection and benefits that protect not only the workers but their families.

Part of our long-range plan was to ensure that there was a process in place to install water meters on every home under the Boards purview. Each rate payer will know exactly what they are being billed for and, they will not be assessed a bill reflecting usage that they did not used. We are working to eliminate the two-tier system; these are major achievements—ones that the citizen’s will benefit from and not be burdened with. I am proud to work on behalf of the citizen’s.

I am a former Elk Grove Water Board Citizens’ Advisory Committee Member; I served on the Elk Grove/Laguna Neighborhood Accountability Board, helping to rehabilitate and refocus troubled youth towards a positive goal. I was a Youth Mentor with the Elk Grove Rotary Club, Mentoring Program—I remain a Rotarian and I am honored to be distinguished as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Cooper, Detrick to Host Child Protection Forum

Elk Grove City Council Members Jim Cooper and Steve Detrick will host a Child Protection Forum this Wednesday night.

Along with county, and state representatives and the forum is meant to identify solutions to offer more protections against sex offenders and improve children’s safety. The forum comes as a follow up to recent concerns expressed at city council meeting regarding youth sex offender residents.

At the September 8 City Council meeting, the Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that limits the proximity of sex offenders to public and private facilities to decrease the potential for victimization of children.

While the amended ordinance provides more protection against adult sex offenders, it does not provide protection against juvenile sex offenders.

Through the Child Protection Forum, city officials and interested citizens can meet with local, county, and state representatives in order to identify and encourage implementation of administrative and legislative changes needed at various levels of government to enhance children’s safety.

The forum will be held at the Elk Grove City Hall council chambers and starts at 6:00 p.m.

A sunny mild day was the setting on Saturday, September 11 for Elk Grove Council Member Gary Davis' Fourth Annual Community Barbecue.

Held at Morse Park on the city's west side, the annual event has grown in size each year since its inception when Davis first held the event as the newly elected District 4 council member. "Its gotten a little bigger every year," Davis said.

Along with free food and soft drinks, hundreds of participants enjoyed live music and children's amusement rides. The food and amusements were all donated by local merchants.

Although there was no official count, Davis' organizers said they had enough food to feed 5,000 and they expected to go through most of it during the three hour event.

As part of his comments, Davis started by noting the significance of the date and asked for a moment of silence to remember the events and honor those who perished nine years earlier.

Other local official in attendance included Vice Mayor Steve Detrick and Elk Grove Unified District School Board member Pricislla Cox. Davis also recognized a gaggle of local candidates on hand including George Murphey, Darren Suen, Doug McElroy, Rod Brewer and Rich Lozano.

"The purpose of this picnic is to celebrate what is good for Elk Grove," Davis said. "It's about bringing people together."

Davis also thanked the various merchants who provided the food, refreshments and entertainment and urged participants to support them and all local merchants. "We are really working hard to bring jobs to our community," Davis noted.

A Big Boost for Small Business: OfficeBay Will Locate to Elk Grove

Last week, the Elk Grove City Council voted unanimously to execute a loan agreement up to $667,000 from the City’s Economic Development Fund to establish a private sector business incubator in Elk Grove.

The City of Elk Grove and the Elk Grove Economic Development Corporation have worked together for more than a year to bring in OfficeBay as a private sector business incubator for the Elk Grove community. Headquartered in Clovis, California, OfficeBay provides individual office space and the technology infrastructure needed to run a business.

“This is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs and small businesses to succeed in Elk Grove,” said Mayor Sophia Scherman. “This project will not only seed the community with new business, but also give opportunities to the more than 2,600 home-based businesses here in Elk Grove to take their business to the next level.”

OfficeBay Elk Grove is expected to house at least 100 businesses between the fixed office and virtual office spaces. This will be the sixth OfficeBay facility in the country.

The proposed location for the project is especially advantageous to small business owners due to its adjacency to the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and the EGEDC, as both provide a variety of services including free consulting, networking, and educational workshops. The City of Elk Grove and the EGEDC will assist these businesses in graduating from the startup stage into larger facilities within the Elk Grove community.

“The City of Elk Grove has formed a true partnership with the EGEDC in putting this project together,” said Tim Moran, Sacramento Service Area President and Methodist Hospital President and CEO, and EGEDC Board Chair. “This is an exciting growth opportunity for Elk Grove as OfficeBay has been extremely successful in nurturing small businesses and contributing toward their long-term expansion by working as the equivalent of a privately-funded business incubator in the communities they serve.”

OfficeBay is proposing to locate up to 16,000-square-foot small business office campus at 9370 Studio Court in Elk Grove. The project will provide office space, executive suites, virtual workstations and all associated physical infrastructure needed to run a small business, and aims to provide affordable pricing and short-term lease solutions for entrepreneurs, new business start-ups, and telecommuting professionals.

In addition to general tenant improvements, the site will also be upgraded with phone and data cabling, Wi-Fi access throughout, IT equipment, a security system, audio/video capabilities, and updated finishes including flooring, paint and lighting. Upon completion, OfficeBay Elk Grove will feature 42 private offices, 10 shared virtual office workstations and 91 total workstations, two conference rooms with LCD and IP phone technology, a business center with copy, scan, fax, mail, and shipping services, a cyber café and other amenities.

It takes so much strength to endure the mental torture one might suffer, in the last hour of life before execution. Now add sadness to that fear, sadness coming from being unjustly punished, sadness coming from the fact that justice is not dealt with merely because of your gender. Along with that sadness is the feeling of helplessness, knowing full well there is no escape from your impending doom. I could not begin to imagine the terror Soraya Manutchehri must have felt in the moments leading up to her stoning.The movie centers on a small village in Iran, a lost journalist/traveler gets car wrecked and find himself stranded for some time in the said village. There he meets a mysterious woman, which is in dire need to tell the story of the horrendous acts that transpired just the day before the journalist arrived.

James Caviezel played Freidoune a French-Iranian journalist there to report on the crimes of the Iranian Government. A very heart rendering performance by the very beautiful Shohreh Aghdashloo, playing Soraya’s aunt Zahra. A strong woman who risked her safety to let the world know the injustices women face in a male dominated society. Soraya is humbly played by Mozhan Marnò, an Iranian American actress who captured the fragility and sadness of a woman who was married off at the young age of 13. Raped, beaten and financially dependent on her cruel husband (rape not shown in movie, but was included in the book,) she had no choice but to stay and endure what he dealt on a daily basis.

I feel very lucky living in a country that gives women so much options (comparative to this little town in Iran and the point of time this film was based on) this film sickened me to the core. Not because of the 20 minutes of screen time dedicated on fully showing the stoning. It sickened me that such men can act like wolves, attacking without reason, without just cause or any proof this woman was a harlot (but even if, punishment such as this is not erving of any creature.) Although it may not be rampant in America, it did happen here as well. Let me get this straight and out of the way though, this is in no shape a reflection of the Iranian people,not all of them are ignorant like the small village that this film portrayed. As a viewer you have to understand that the village was detached from any other civilization, and the people of this village had to depend on what they knew best, the old rules of religion and the heavy set standard of a Patriarchal society. This was not a political movie to make the viewers have the wrong idea about Iran, but to help understand that this does happen no matter what part of the world. With enough ignorance and detachment to equality, this can and will happen again to anyone may they be black, white, asian, men, women, children etc... etc...

The injustice does not end with the stoning, but how at the end her family could not even bury her dead body, that wild animals just picked at her meat and left just bones on the side of the river where she was left. Soraya did not even have the right to a proper burial, that even in death she had no sacred rights to her own spiritual salvation.

Beautifully shot, cluding great landscape shots, and sunset scenes. Makes the whole film feel like a beautiful nightmare. The viewer starts to feel like a sane person in asylum full of the crazies, then the truth sinks in, this was true, this was a real person, this was a real place in time. This was murder, not justice, she was not a criminal she was a woman.

Navid Negahban played Ali, Soraya's abundantly evil husband. Accused Soraya of infidelity to get out of paying her dowry back. Ali also tries to wed a 13-14 yr old girl who was a daughter of
a prisoner sentenced to death. In return for helping to save the prisoners life, the prisoner will let Ali wed his youngest daughter. Ali then sets a chain reaction in his wife's demise. Soraya's husband lies, blackmails, and threatens people to get his way. Knowing full well of the punishment for infidelity, he turns the whole village against Soraya.

Greatly written story, and great director for the project. Cyrus Mowrasteh mostly has directed many television projects, but it only just gave him great practice making this film his best as of yet. This film was released in 2008 but the message will resonate to generations to come.

Treat all those you meet how you would like to be treated, thats the motto I would like to go by, somehow people forget this mindset. Aside from Religion, Government, and Spirituality, we have to treat others much like they were our own selves.

So again, I did not get to see any new movie, namely
because there are no good reasons to this week. The prices are going
up, 3D movies are the new rage and many movies are jumping the band
wagon to squeeze more money instead of improving the movie itself
(namely ‘the last
airbender’.)

So what is coming in the future for the film industry?

Natalie Portman with Mila Kunis, has
released an official trailer. Much talk or hype surrounds this film
due to the kissing scene between the two lead actresses, yet there is
something also appealing about the story of it. The story is about a
ballerina (Natalie Portman) who befriends another dancer (Mila Kunis)
in her troop who oddly embodies what she lacks in personality. The
film is a dark thriller, and from what I get from the trailer it looks
some what out of touch with reality, like American Psycho was.

I am sure it has a great twist
at the end that has something to do with the main characters psyche. I
love movies that have plot twists, knowing Darren Aronofsky though I
think he can deliver suspense. The movie is being shown in film
festivals and will eventually grace our screens in December 2010,
limited screens though. View the trailer
here. I love psycho thriller movies, like Single white female, or
Fatal Attraction with Glenn Close. I just like movies that show the
insanity in people, may they be over the top or not. It is still
relatively true.

They have compiled the top 20 horror directors (in their opinion.) In
the list they have Director David Cronenberg as #7 the director of The
Fly (circa 1986) and Dierector Tobe Hooper of the Texas Chainsaw
massacre fame. What irritates me the most is that they put Alfred
Hitchcock in #5 than in #1. I guess in their respective criteria, they
like more of the show-me-gore kind of movies, rounding the list off is
John Carpenter. Come on!!!? Halloween? Really? I don’t think if it was
not for Hitchcock, there would not be any Halloween!? Ugh… okay I may
be a little over the top since Hitchcock is my favorite of all
Directors. A little? No, I am definitely over the
top.

So they are doing a new
spiderman franchise. Got a new actor to play Peter Parker, and now
they are looking for his love interest. But although they are looking
for a female actress to play the love counterpart, the character would
not be that of Mary Jane Watson. No sir-ee bob. They are holding off
on introducing Mary Jane, maybe even later on in the franchise. They
may introduce Gwen Stacy first, but that may just be a guess.

Emma Roberts had read Andrew Gardfield and she may be in the running.
Although many other upcoming actresses are contending for the unknown
part.

Lastly, they finally found an
actress to play Lisbet for the American version of The Girl with the
Dragon tattoo. The U.S version will be directed by David Fincher, and
he had selected Rooney
Mara for the lead actress. A rather unknown actress, she had
worked with Fincher on "the Social Network." There Fincher might have
seen a little Lisbet in her. Hopefully she can pull it of and make
Noomi Repace proud.

Henry’s Market to Giveaway Groceries at Wednesday’s Grand Opening

The long-anticipated opening of Henry’s Market in Elk Grove this Wednesday morning could draw crowds hoping to receive free groceries.

As part of its festivities, the San Diego-based grocer will give away a bag of groceries to the first 200 customers when it officially opens at 8:00 a.m. this Wednesday.

“In these tough economic times, that’s sure to attract a good number of people who need some help,” Janet Little, Henry’s Farmers Market’s nutritionist and spokesperson said.

The grocer will occupy a 33,000 square foot facility at 8211 Laguna Boulevard that formerly housed Circuit City. The Elk Grove store represents the firm’s first foray into the Northern California. The chain has 34 outlets in Southern California.

In addition to the grocery giveaway, anyone named Henry who can provide identification will be given a free sandwich.

The grand opening festivities start at 7:45 a.m.

Coffee With a Cop - Elk Grove Police Department reaches out to the Community

Have you ever wanted to ask a police officer a question, but didn’t know how to go about doing it? Officers from the Elk Grove Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Unit will be available to answer questions from members of the community on August 20, 2010 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Starbucks (2300 Longport Court) and Nugget Market (7101 Elk Grove Blvd.) as part of the “Coffee with a Cop” program.

The “Coffee with a Cop” program is a unique way to strengthen the partnership between the police department and the community it serves.

Members of the community will be able to ask specific or general questions related to the neighborhoods they live in.

Noodles & Company is opening in Elk Grove

Noodles & Company is opening in Elk Groveon Friday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. The new restaurant is located at 7405 Laguna Blvd.

In celebration of the grand opening, the new restaurant is hosting a pre-opening fundraiser for the Cosumnes CSD Parks & Recreation on Wednesday, August 11, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the organization, which will help support free family events for the Elk Grove community.

Movies with Maricor: 'Runaways' runs away from the point

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon

It’s not only a man’s dream to be a rock God. To be the creator of your own sound, your own style, it is just second nature to both sexes. This movie just clears that confusion. The creation of that unique sound has to happen at the right place and the right time, and these girls represented Rock and Roll in its infancy.

We have Joan Jett, played mundanely by Kristen Stewart, learning how to play the guitar in her own accord. Due to unwillingness of teachers to teach her real rock and roll guitar riffs, she took it upon herself to bond with her instrument in the comforts of her own bathroom. While a platinum blonde Cherrie Currie, played by Dakota Fanning, manages to piss everyone off in her High School talent show by lip syncing to Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie. Putting the two girls together with other girl musicians making the Runaways was Kim Fowley, played annoyingly by Michael Shannon.

Too many irrelevant things and too little of the important ones; Tries to Hard to be Edgy

The movie mainly focuses on Cherrie Currie’s experiences as the lead singer; secondary to the scope of the movie is Joan Jett’s need to hold the band together. The film works as a giant music video, -of which FYI, the director was a music video director- there are too many long winding vignettes of the girls walking around strutting to music. There are too many irrelevant things and too little of the important ones.

For one thing, the fact that Rock and Roll is supposedly a man’s realm is always eluded to. We hear the characters talk about the music scene, but it never is visually expressed. We don’t get character cameos of the Sex Pistols, Blondie, or other bands they may have opened for or who have opened for them. It would have been nice to see the dynamics of an all girl band in a gritty male dominated music genre. If the span of this movie is based on the beginning to the end of their band’s lifespan, it would have been detrimental to paint a better scope of what kind of music they represented if other bands were present also.

I hate to say this, but I found myself fast forwarding through a lot of the needless scenes they compounded into what time allotted for the director. There was a kissing scene between Cherrie and Joan, a very acid-induced psychedelic trippy scene trying to depict the sexual tension. Yeah I get it, they are rebels, they are young, they are promiscuous, blah blah friggin blah… but what the hell does this part mean to the rest of the film? What was the purpose of showing Joan Jett boning Cherrie Currie in a long winding scene innuendo? Why was there a scene where Joan was in the washroom with Lita helping her masturbate then cut to another scene very unrelated to the previous. This was just a messy, messy biopic.

There was one saving grace of this movie, the scene where the Group performs “Cherry Bomb” to their Japanese fans. This is the scene I wanted to see, I’ve seen that same performance on television a long time ago, and I wanted to see how Dakota Fanning was going to do. She nailed it to a T. Dakota Fanning was a surprise, considering how risqué the performance was going to be. The real Cherrie Curie was confident, bold, and unabashed with sensuality. Watching Dakota nail it may have saved the movie from being such a waste in my eyes.

I cannot say the same thing about Kristen Stewart’s performance. Although she did a good job rocking out as Joan Jett in the concert scenes, but other than that she cannot act to save her life. I might offend a lot of teeny boppers, but this performance was not her best. In serious situations, she acts like she is hyperventilating, often confusing sadness with constant blinking and shrugging; Often over acting to force or cause an ungenuine reaction.

Over all I give this movie 2.5 out of 5 hearts.

I love biographical movies, but this one was trying too hard to be so edgy, it forgot that the edge comes from rock n’ roll music and not from slow mo’ walking, starring and posing.

Just a Pretty Boy?

There are not a lot of movies out this week, and honestly I really don’t want to see Salt with Angelina Jolie.

Seems like the creativity in Hollywood has been running dry.and we have an abundance of super hero movies, but no new stories aside from Inception so I am just going to re-cap some entertainment news from this week.

BTW… who is happy about the Green Lantern coming out in 2011? Ryan Reynolds will play the titular role…. To me, he would always just be a pretty boy, he has no repertoire for any serious roles. Isn’t he going to be Dead Pool too in one of those X-Men franchises/spin off movies? To me, playing two comic strip characters is over kill. Plus it negates the fantasy from each character, how can I fully accept that he is the Green Lantern, if I saw him as Dead Pool, and visa versa? Maybe I just lack imagination and patience for super heroes. I stop at Iron man, only Iron man.

Hey Booboo...

According to 411.mania Karl Urban is in talks with John Wagner about possibly taking the role of Judge Dredd. Karl Urban as you may know was Eomer in Lord of the Rings and was also Cupid/Cesar from Xena:warrior princess (which by the way they should make a movie out of if they are running out of heroes.) It’s about time he gets a gig that might get his name out there to be remembered. A very good actor, but I hope after Judge Dredd he would do a drama or a romance.

Coming this Christmas!

Zack Snyder is releasing Sucker punch in March 25th in 2011. According to Digitaltrends.com the movie is indescribable. The new trailer does not leave any hint as to what kind of genre this movie is. I’ll leave it up to you guys to make your minds up if this is a drama, action, or a chick flick. It stars Zac Efron’s lady love, Vanesa Hudgens, Emily Browning and John Hamm. About a girl who escapes from her problems by creating her own world within her mind. I like Zack Snyder’s past work, specially the scantily clad Spartans movie 300. I hope he keeps working with CGI and green screen technology that makes his films so unique from the rest.

Oh yess!!!! Yogi Bear’s official Poster was released. I am so excited for this one, namely because I use to watch the cartoons.

Although Dan Akroyd as Yogi? Hhhhhm his voice is more like a robot’s than a bears. Don’t they look cute and cuddly?

As you all know, and this is not breaking news, Angelina Jolie is in talks to play Cleopatra in another adaptation of the Egyptian Queen’s life. A lot of people say that someone else that looks the part should play the queen. I might want Halle Berry to play her, or Rosario Dawson. Who would you like to play Cleo?

Speaking of which, they are also going to make a new movie that depicts the life of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. According to The Guardian UK Hollywood A-listers are trying to win the chance to play the two love birds during their whirlwind romance. Russell Crow was said to be in “the running” for Richard Burton, while there is no definite actress pinned for the female role. Emily Watson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Angelina Jolie are also expressing serious interest.

I hope it’s not Angelina uh-gain….

A Dubious Second Anniversary For The Elk Grove Promenade

What elected official said ‘All three anchors are locked in’ and ‘It’s coming along nicely’

Last Sunday came and went without any fanfare marking the second anniversary of the halting of construction on the Elk Grove Promenade shopping center.

EGN has pegged the construction halt date based on a published report from our colleagues at the Elk Grove Citizen who reported construction had halted on July 25, 2008.

During the last two years not only has construction halted, the Promenade’s developer, Chicago-based General Growth Property (GGP) filed the largest ever real estate Chapter 11 bankruptcy in American business history in early 2009.

Since then the project has languished as GGP has worked its way through bankruptcy proceedings. This hasn’t stopped rampant speculation about the future of outdoor regional mall on Elk Grove’s struggling south side.

The speculated future of the half-built strip center has ranged from an outlet mall to other mass-market discount retailers such as Target or Wal-Mart.

There were however positive comments posted on Elk Grove Online in the months preceding and days following the halting of construction that tried painting a very rosy picture of the stranded ship the Promenade has become. This elected official using the handle egca95624 said:

Okay, lets end some speculation here.

I just had a meeting yesterday afternoon with the mall developer and this is what I was told:

All three anchors are locked in as well as the two other announced majors, including another major that is pretty cool and will be announced sometime soon. There are some eateries that people are going to be excited about already committed. Most of the inline shops have solid deals, but some are coming back for sweeter openings, given the current climate.

Bear in mind, the conditions of approval require a certain # of "A" list stores and a certain # of "B" list stores, so there is only wiggle room with regard to which ones...

All things are a go for a March 19, 2009 grand opening.

I told him if he could make another run at a Dave & Busters or John's Incredible Pizza, or some other family/kid friendly entertainment eatery, that would probably score major brownie points.

Nearly 40 communities within Elk Grove are teaming up with the Elk Grove Police Department on Tuesday, August 3rd for the 27th annual National Night Out celebration. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local crime prevention programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Scherman, City Council Showdown Set For Wednesday Night

Call it The Showdown at the Elk Grove City Council with this question - Who'll blink first.

On Wednesday, July 28 the Elk Grove City Council will conduct a special meeting to consider whether or not Council Member Sophia Scherman's title of Mayor be stripped from her for the remainder of the year. This meeting comes as a result of a meeting Scherman hastily scheduled on Tuesday, July 20 for Wednesday, July 21.

The July 21 meeting's stated purpose was to form an ad-hoc committee of council members to explore options on dealing with group homes housing juvenile sex offenders. Council members Jim Cooper, Gary Davis and Steve Detrick were unable to attend the meeting citing scheduling conflicts.

Aside from citing scheduling conflicts, Cooper, Davis and Detrick had a joint letter read into the record questioning Scherman's scheduling of the meeting at an early hour, the need for the meeting given the item would appear on the following regular meeting agenda and Scherman's unwillingness to reschedule the meeting given her knowledge all three were unavailable.

Scherman's 'deceitful' behavior

The letter went on to condemn Scherman for what they said was "deceitful behavior of the past' [city council's] and added that it "must not be repeated." The statement concluded with the declaration that a special meeting would be convened to "discuss the role of the Mayor and also to consider the appointment of the Mayor for 2010.”

Political implications

While internal conflicts are nothing new to the Elk Grove City Council, this particular conflict has particular implications for Cooper, Davis and Pat Hume.

For Cooper, the outcome and whether or not Scherman is stripped of her duties could become cannon fodder for his opponent, Scott Jones, in the race to be the next Sheriff of Sacramento County.

The showdown will surely become an issue for Davis who is being challenged by Jimmie Johnson, a past Cosumnes Community Services District director candidate. Johnson will undoubtedly use this as an issue as he has already said he will remind voters of “a real ugly side of Elk Grove politics.”

Hume, whose popularity and reputation in Elk Grove politics seems to be on the same projectile as former council members Dan Briggs and Mike Leary, faces a no-win situation.

Supporting Scherman's actions can paint him as a puppet of the person who midwifed his political career. Likewise, turning his back on Scherman will label his as disloyal.

The question at Wednesday's meeting will be; Who will blink first.

July Fantastic Fridays Shop Local Program Kicks Off

New “Fantastic Event” starts this month at Laguna Gateway Shopping Center on Saturday

Elk Grove businesses are teaming up again for the July Fantastic Fridays shop local program, offering shoppers new incentives to spend locally and keep sales tax dollars in Elk Grove.

New this month is the “Fantastic Event” on Saturday at Laguna Gateway Shopping Center from 8 a.m. to noon. The Fantastic Event: Dog Days of Summer will feature a bounce house for the kids, live music, local businesses, vehicles from the Elk Grove Automall, and fresh produce direct from regional growers at the Farmer’s Market.

On the day of the event, individual spaces will be made available to Elk Grove businesses on a first come, first served basis adjacent to the Farmer’s Market beginning at 7 a.m. Businesses may sign up at the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce booth. Participating businesses can bring tents, tables and anything else needed to present products or services to the public.

Due to the nature of the Farmer’s Market, some restrictions do apply. No food preparation is allowed. Electricity and water are not available. Space is limited, and all participants are requested to be set and ready to go by 8 a.m. and stay until noon. The charge for each participating business is $20.00 (cash or check only made payable to the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce, day of event). Guest Editorial: The Gulf Between Us and Dan Lungren

Dan Lungren is out of touch.

That’s the only way to explain why Dan stood silent in Congress while his colleague, Texas Rep. Joe Barton, offered an apology to BP and as the Republican Congressional policy group he’s a member of called the compensation fund for victims of the oil disaster a “shakedown.”

Dan had a choice: Stand up for his constituents, American taxpayers and those in the Gulf affected by this disaster, or do nothing. After taking more than $75,000 from the oil and gas industry, and as a leading supporter of off shore oil drilling, Dan’s silence speaks volumes about who he’s working for.

The sad truth is this: it’s big corporations, not us.

As a doctor, I understand how actions can affect lives. What you say and do in a crisis matters. There isn’t the luxury of remaining silent, or standing on the sidelines. There is a need for clear and decisive action. If I was in Congress, I would act to protect taxpayers and the environment; Dan chose to stay silent and avoid upsetting his campaign contributors.

That’s the difference between Dan and me.

My campaign for Congress is about reaching out to our local communities to have a real, honest discussion about how to create jobs, improve our schools and make health insurance more affordable.

To be blunt, Dan’s campaign is about taking care of his big corporate contributors. Instead of accepting invitations to debate the issues, he continues to hide behind handlers. Instead of saying where he stands and rising up to the challenges we face, Dan canceled joint appearances at the last minute – not once, but twice.

This is a far cry from the Dan Lungren who once said: “Let's have an old-fashioned Lincoln-Douglas style debate… Why can't we be without handlers? Why can't we just say who we are, what we are and what we stand for?” (Dan Lungren, Los Angeles Times, May 14, 1998 http://articles.latimes.com/1998/may/14/news/ss-49779/32)

I agree with Dan on this point. That’s why I have challenged him to a series of five debates, one in each county of the Third Congressional District.

The people deserve an open and honest debate on the issues that illustrate the choice they will have this November.

Will Dan have the character to answer his own question? Or will he just keep hiding behind his handlers and their negative attacks?

Jimmie Johnson Files Statement of Organization in Campaign Against Davis

Elk Grove District 4 City Council Candidate Jimmie Johnson filed his California Form 410 Statement of Organization yesterday with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office.

A Capitol Mall attorney, Johnson is seeking to oust Gary Davis from the district 4 council seat he has held since 2006.

According to his filing, Johnson has dubbed his committee "Citizens for a Better Elk Grove City Council - Jimmie Johnson 2010." Johnson lists himself as the treasurer, the only campaign officer noted on the form.

Previous bid for elected office

Although Johnson has never held elected office, he did make an unsuccessful run for a seat on the Cosumnes Community Services District in 2008. In a race that had seven candidates for three seats, Johnson came in sixth place.

More recently Johnson was a member of the Elk Grove City Charter Commission. That commission, which disbanded last January, failed to draft a charter that was acceptable to the Elk Grove City Council and dissolved amidst conflicts with the city council. Johnson is also a current member of the city's Historic Preservation Committee.

Dr. Bera Kicks Off Door-to-Door Campaign to Un-seat Lungren

Last Saturday the Bera for Congress Campaign kicked off their door-to-door canvassing efforts with a large rally at the campaign’s Elk Grove Headquarters. After speaking to his supporters, Dr. Bera and the crowd of volunteers spread out into Elk neighborhoods throughout the district, knocking on doors and meeting voters face-to-face.

“Our grassroots campaign has created a lot of momentum over the last few months,” said Dr. Bera. “It’s clear that our message of job creation, economic opportunity and new leadership is resonating with residents all over northern California.”

Participants included area residents active in the Bera for Congress Campaign, including Jonathan Wilson and Diane Campbell, both from Elk Grove.

“Canvassing for Dr. Bera was really fun,” said Jonathan Wilson, an 18-year old participant in the Bera campaign’s internship program. “After I heard Dr. Bera speak I was really inspired to get involved with his campaign, and when I told my neighbors what he believed in, getting them to vote for Dr. Bera was easy!”

Diane Campbell, also an Elk Grove resident, appreciated Dr. Bera’s commitment to restoring economic opportunity.

“I’ve lived in California almost all of my life, and I’m proud to volunteer my time to help Dr. Bera win this election,” she said. “I’m tired of career politicians like Dan Lungren bailing out Wall Street and protecting Big Oil – we need new leadership. EG Police Make Two Separate Domestic Violence Arrests

Elk Grove Police made two arrests yesterday in separate domestic violence incidents.

In the first case, 23-year old Cindy Escobar of Sacramento was involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Escobar allegedly stuck her victim in the side of the head with an object.

The victim suffered a laceration to the head but did not require medical attention. The suspect was arrested and transferred to the county jail.

In the other case police arrested 43-year old Kevin Robinson of San Francisco following a verbal argument that turned in a physical altercation.

Robinson allegedly grabbed his victim by the wrist and threw the victim to the ground. The suspect also reportedly damaged the rear window of the victims vehicle with a tree stake.

The suspect was transferred to the county jail.

Elk Grove City Council to close out fiscal year 2010 with short meeting

After a fiscal year of often contentious meetings, the Elk Grove City Council’s last meeting of fiscal year 2010 should be a relatively short affair covering only two agenda items.

After having approved its 2011 budget by dipping into reserves to balance its budget, the city will avoid the torturous process that many other local governments, not to mention the State of California, are going through to struggle their budgets in face of the Great Recession.

On the agenda the city will consider the sale of 26.5 acres to the Sacramento Regional Transit District for mitigation purposes and approval submittal of the 2010 CalHome Program Application.

The meeting starts at 6:00 pm. There is no closed session scheduled.

Expresses 'Disgust' with city council

During the Wednesday, June 9 meeting of the Elk Grove City Council former Elk Grove City Charter Commissioner and Chair Jake Allen addressed the Elk Grove City Council and expressed his "disgust" with their recent actions.

Specifically Allen was disgusted that the council was considering requesting a Sacramento County Grand Jury investigation into allegations Council Member Pat Hume threatened an Elk Grove citizen.

Aside from his obvious sarcasm particularly towards Council Member Jim Cooper, Allen, along with former planning commissioners Paul Lindsay and Tim Murphy's underlying message to the council was to quit playing politics and look out for the interests of the people of Elk Grove.

Seemingly a reasonable request - except they too are doing the same exact thing they are condemning.

Tim Murphy was a planning commissioner until Mike Leary was defeated in a landslide by Steve Detrick in 2008. Furthermore, Murphy's name has been floating around the local rumor mill as being interested in running for Cooper's seat had Cooper won an outright victory in Tuesday's primary for Sacramento County Sheriff.

In a twist of irony, if Murphy is in fact posturing for Cooper's seat, not only did Cooper not win the election outright, he came in a disappointing second place to Scott Jones. If Murphy does have city council aspirations, they will have to wait.

Like Murphy, Paul Lindsay is a former planning commission who was appointed by former council member Rick Soares. Soares was defeated by Hume in 2006.

Lindsay was a well respected planning commissioner who perhaps is still upset by the unsuccessful effort to deny St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church a zoning change. One can only speculate what his motivation was.

Then there is Jake Allen...

Allen gave the most stinging rebuke of the council delivered in the manner that would have made the late Johnny Cochran proud. Maybe Allen should consider a career as an attorney.

Not only did Allen criticize a majority of the council, he took the opportunity to slam Cooper's radio campaign advertisements.

This in not the first time Allen raged against the city council. His most recent rage was last January when Allen delivered his "farewell" speech following the delivery of the charter commission's report.

The proposed city charter was largely shepherded by Allen and former charter commission members Jimmie Johnson (who is running against Council Member Gary Davis) and Hume's charter commission appointee Christopher Orrock (who resigned from the commission under a cloud after being accused of spreading rumors) but was rejected by the council.

Allen's wife, Bobbie Singh-Allen, was a political consultant for Mayor Sophia Scherman. Scherman is Hume's patron, mentor and sole ally on the city council.

Is the picture becoming clear?

So for Murphy, Lindsay and Allen to imply they are solely looking out for the interests of the people of Elk Grove is disingenuous. They are doing nothing more than what they are accusing others of doing - playing politics.

In reality the team of Murphy, Lindsay and Allen were three stooges for Hume and Scherman in their proxy battle against the "majority," as Allen called them, of the city council. Perhaps the anger from Hume and Scherman stems from the stinging defeat they suffered in the recent SOI battle or some other internal battle being waged.

By the way, listen for Cooper saying "thanks" to Allen at the end of the video. I guess Cooper wanted the last word.

Cooper maintains stance, Davis and Detrick flip

The Elk Grove City Council decided during their regular meeting last night to not request a Sacramento County Grand Jury investigation into allegations that council member Pat Hume threatened an Elk Grove citizen.

The 3-1 vote marked a reversal of its decision at the last meeting to refer the investigation of Hume to the Grand Jury.

Mayor Sophia Scherman, Vice Mayor Steve Detrick and council member Gary Davis voted to drop the request while Jim Cooper voted against the motion during a tense session. Hume recused himself from the proceedings.

The change in tack came after the council heard public testimony from eight speakers who all condemned the investigation of Hume. In their seemingly coordinated effort, they collectively called the investigation an embarrassment to the city and urged the council to drop the matter.

Former appointed city officials take aim at council, investigation

Among the speakers were former planning commissioners Tim Murphy and Paul Lindsay and former city charter commissioner Jake Allen. All three urged the city to drop the matter saying it was a waste of time and resources for the city.

Murphy, who was appointed by former city council member Mike Leary and lost his seat upon Leary's defeat in 2008, characterized the allegations against Hume as “manufactured” and asked the city to “cease action” on the item.

“I see what’s going on here and it’s an embarrassment to the city,” Murphy added.

While Murphy focused his comments on the issue, Lindsay and Allen took the opportunity to criticize individual council members.

Saying that Hume was being “bullied,” Lindsay criticized council members Davis and Detrick for taking campaign contributions from the Elk Grove Community Connection (EGCC). One of EGCC’s directors, Connie Conley, is the citizen who has asserted that Hume threatened her and her family.

Lindsay implied they were beholden to EGCC because of the contributions and they should recuse themselves. “There is simply no case here,” he added.

The strongest and most personal rebuke came from former Elk Grove City Charter Commission Chair Jake Allen who addressed the council, and Cooper in particular, in an often sarcastic manner.

Echoing the embarrassment theme, Allen mocked Cooper’s recent Sheriff’s campaign radio ads noting that while the ads said Cooper was a mayor and city council member, it didn’t mention Elk Grove. “I’d be embarrassed to,” Allen quipped.

Deliberations

After hearing the comments, Cooper noted that the matter should not have been placed on the agenda as it had seemingly been resolved at the last meeting. “This should have never come back here,” he said.

While discussing his rational for requesting the Grand Jury investigation of the matter based on his law enforcement experience, Cooper was interrupted by a rebuttal in the audience. Looking toward the back of the sparsely occupied chamber in the direction of Lindsay and Murphy, who were seated together, Cooper sternly said “Public comment is over.”

Davis said that the matter was an embarrassment for the city and that he was on record in this case and the earlier ethics investigation of Detrick that both are a distraction from the council focusing on more important matters.

“The point of sending this to the Grand Jury is so they can deal with it,” he said.

Citing the Detrick investigation earlier this year, Davis noted the same people who urged Mayor Scherman and the council to investigate alleged ethics violations by Detrick, are now urging the city council to drop the matter.

Murphy, Lindsay and Elk Grove resident Tom Waltman, who also spoke on the matter last night, were among several who accused Detrick of violating the city’s code of ethics during council deliberations on the matter of the St. Marie Goretti Catholic Church last year. On her own Scherman authorized the hiring of a private attorney to investigate that matter which found no wrong-doing on Detrick’s part.

When Detrick spoke on the matter, he addressed Lindsay directly.

“I take offense from Mr. Lindsay,” Detrick said. “I am beholden to no one but my family.”

Detrick also addressed assertions that EGCC campaign contributions to him, Davis and Cooper were motivating factors in seeking the investigation. Detrick said that with the exception of Scherman, EGCC had made political contributions to all council members including Hume.

“Let’s be clear on the facts,” Detrick said as he admonished Lindsay.

During further deliberations Davis said that he was not comfortable with the matter and indicated that he would support dropping the matter. Davis seconded a motion by Scherman to drop the matter and the matter was approved by a 3-1 vote.

Cooper, who voted against the matter, expressed frustration with Davis over his comments that he was not comfortable with the matter. “You should have said so last time,” Cooper said.

Leary hearing delayed; he smiles, in good spirits

The defense asked for and got a delay Tuesday in the pending matter of People v. Michael Leary, #09F07685 the former Sacramento jail commander suspected of fraud, forgery and other related felonies.

The prosecution quickly bowed to the postponement request so Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Gary Ransom moved Leary’s last pre-trial hearing to 1:30 p.m. July 6. There is now no firm start date for the trial.

Outside of court, defense attorney William Portonova dodged being specific about exactly why he’d sought the delay.

Problems may have arisen in rounding up needed documents or materials and unnamed individuals may have experienced a change of mind and/or heart in recent weeks, Portonova alluded.

“Time wounds all heels,” he added, cryptically.

Leary, 49 – dressed neatly in a sharp black suit and red shirt with no necktie – smiled at the mention. He appeared to be in good spirits. Observed leaving the courthouse about an hour later he still appeared to be engaged in jovial conversation with companions.

The former Sacramento sheriff’s lieutenant faces four felonies allegedly committed during a disputed property transfer involving the transfer of title for a $610,000 residence at 3301 Marina Cove Circle, Elk Grove.

The other party in the troubled transfer was Leary’s former live-in girlfriend Alyc K. Maselli.

Leary pled innocent to all charges. If convicted, he could be looking at 12 years in state prison and a fine of up to $75,000. He remains free on bail.

A 27-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, Leary left his high-ranking post when he was arrested.

Leary was also an Elk Grove city councilman for 10 years before losing a re-election bid. Before that he was Elk Grove community services director.

He and Maselli were reportedly planning marriage when their falling out occurred over a banking dispute in early 2008, court documents showed.

Marcus Rondez Memorial Service This Thursday

Elk Grove Schools, Teacher Reach Tentative Agreement

On June 2, 2010 the Elk Grove Education Association (EGEA) informed the Elk Grove Unified School District that its members ratified a two-year Tentative Agreement (TA) with the district.

The agreement includes concessions from EGEA that total about $23 million for each year. In exchange, the teacher's association negotiated approximately $13 million in position restorations for each year. The remaining $10 million will assist the district with its $60.5 million shortfall for 2010-2011 and again in 2011-2012.

The TA will allow the district to restore approximately 210 certificated positions including Elementary and Secondary Teachers, Secondary Counselors (29 already rescinded with 37 more restored), Secondary Librarians, 1 position per high school for 9th grade Class Size Reduction, some Adult Education and ROP Teachers and continuation of secondary adjunct duty stipends.

The concessions are for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. The concessions for each year include: 9 furlough days (5 instructional plus 4 pre-service or professional development days); a suspension of the lottery checks; a column salary movement freeze; a salary reduction of $4 million for the EGEA unit; a 10 percent athletic stipend reduction; an increase in health benefits co-payments and the elimination of dual health coverage for spouses.

The superintendent and associate superintendents will take concessions equivalent to those taken by EGEA members. EGUSD also continues its ongoing negotiations with all other employee groups.

EGUSD and EGEA are working to determine the five instructional furlough days. As soon as the days are determined information will be shared with staff, parents, and the community. The furlough days and revised calendar will be posted on the district's website.

Leary's last pre-trial hearing slated for Tuesday

Former Sacramento County sheriff’s Lt. Michael P. Leary is slated to be in court tomorrow for what is likely to be his last pre-trial hearing before he stands trial for several felonies allegedly committed during a disputed property transfer.

Trial of the one-time Elk Grove city council member is expected to begin in superior court June 29. He is looking at four criminal counts springing from a challenged transfer of title for a $610,000 residence at 3301 Marina Cove Circle, Elk Grove.

The 49-year-old Leary was booked and arraigned in October 2009 on charges of grand theft fraud and forgery stemming from the transfer between himself and his former live-in girlfriend Alyc K. Maselli in 2006.

Leary has pleaded innocent to all charges. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 12 years in state prison and fined $75,000. He remains free on bail.

A woman scorned; her revenge delayed...

The matter of People v. Leary, #09F07685 has been stalled for months by various pre-trial motions and hearings.

City Council to Consider Letter Seeking Investigation of Hume

The Elk Grove City Council will once again discuss allegations that fellow Council Member Pat Hume made threats to a citizen of Elk Grove during the Wednesday, June 3 regular meeting.

While the city council decided at the last meeting to ask the Sacramento County Grand Jury to investigate allegations that Hume threatened a local citizen and her family, the exact nature of the requests were not finalized. At Wednesday's meeting the council will review a letter written seeking the investigation.

The matter had been previously referred to the Sacramento County Grand Jury by the Elk Grove Police Department. Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Lehner referred the matter so as not to give the appearance of a conflict of interest.

In their letter back to Lehner, the DA's office said that if a criminal trial against Hume were to proceed, a guilty verdict would be unlikely and the matter therefore should not be pursued. The attorney investigating the matter, Michael Blazina, is also the lead prosecutor in the criminal trial of former Elk Grove City Council member and former Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff Mike Leary on real estate fraud charges.

2011 budget

While the council will deliberate the Hume letter as the second to last item of business on Wednesday, it will be likely be late in the night as the council will have a full agenda preceding it.

Perhaps the most time consuming matter will be council deliberations on the 2011 city budget. Additionally, among other items the council will consider are e-Tran bus service changes due to Regional Transit service cuts and language for a November ballot initiative seeking a changes to the city's utility user modernization measure.

At-risk Elk Grove Girls Located

Elk Grove Police announced that Victoria and Destiny Keller were located earlier this afternoon.

The two girls, who were reported missing from their home and thought to be runaways, were located by relatives at a residence in Sacramento.
